Ask an occupational therapist (OT) before using a bed rail or bed lever. Don't add one as a precaution without advice about the person, bed and mattress together.
The risk is more than a loose fixing
The MHRA's bed rail safety guidance describes serious harm from entrapment and from climbing over rails. Gaps between equipment, the mattress and the bed can create hazards. A different mattress or overlay can change the arrangement.
A bed lever used to assist movement has a different purpose from a rail intended to form a barrier. The product name alone does not establish suitability.
What to ask the assessor
- What problem is the equipment intended to address?
- Is there a more suitable alternative?
- Has this exact bed and mattress combination been considered?
- Who will fit it, show us how to use it and check it?
- Which changes mean it needs reassessing?
Do not improvise extra padding, alter components or combine equipment outside the manufacturer's instructions. Contact the supplying service if something moves, is damaged or no longer fits as expected.

HSE also explains why bed rails need careful assessment and management. This page is a starting point for asking questions, not a fitting guide. Assessment routes differ across the UK; ask the local equipment or occupational therapy service.
