Disabled Facilities Grants: start with the right route

An introduction to adaptation grants, with England's headline maximum and official routes for all four UK nations.

A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) can help with approved changes to a home. It is not a promise of funding for a product you have chosen.

England: the headline information

GOV.UK gives a maximum of up to £30,000 in England. Adult applications are normally means-tested, and the council decides the contribution and approved work. An application for a disabled child is handled differently; ask the council to explain the applicable process.

The official overview describes possible work such as access changes and bathroom adaptations. The proposed work must be assessed through the relevant process.

Ask before works start

Apply through your local council. Ask about the assessment, application documents, permissions and written approval. Starting work before approval can put the grant at risk.

Keep any quotes and correspondence together. If you rent, ask which landlord permissions are needed; do not assume the grant application supplies them automatically.

Elsewhere in the UK

Use our council help signposter to find the starting point. For help understanding an application, contact Citizens Advice or Age UK. This guide cannot decide eligibility.
